On May 11, 2016, when SJTU Design was founded, the Center for Innovative Design (International Service) of Shanghai Jiaotong University was approved as the first national key construction project of Shuangchuang Demonstration Base. The following year, on the 121th anniversary of Jiaotong University, the Innovation Design Center of Shanghai Jiaotong University was formally established. Two months later, the First-class Discipline Construction Program of Innovative Design passed the school's demonstration that the "Innovation Design" discipline group driven by "Design and Industry" and "Design and Environment" was newly emerged. Jiaotong University Design is stepping into the Great Design era! Design is a special art subject with innovative value, which lies between philosophy, humanities, engineering and other technological sciences. "Innovative design" refers to a kind of practical activity that gives full play to the creativity of designers, uses the relevant scientific and technological achievements of human beings to carry out innovative ideas, and designs scientific, creative, innovative and practical results. The essence of design is innovation. Innovative design is not the simple implantation or superposition of the word "innovation", but the integration of innovative ideas into the philosophy of design, so that innovation becomes the normal and solid state of design. 

The design discipline of Jiaotong University makes full use of the national double-creation demonstration base, organically combines the innovative design center with the international education platform and the construction of first-class disciplines, further expands the connotation and extension of innovative design to the fields of Humanities and society, and constructs according to the requirements of world-class disciplines with high standards, with a view to leading the development of design discipline. Specifically, the "Innovative Design" discipline group of Shanghai Jiaotong University is based on design as the main discipline, architecture and landscape architecture as the supporting discipline, relying on the intersection of mechanical engineering, management science and engineering, computer science and technology, ecology and other dominant disciplines, which conforms to the future development trend of human society. Nowadays, new interdisciplinary subjects are needed in the development of national strategy. It is a "distant hybridization" across the four disciplines of art, engineering, management and science. It integrates the multiple attributes of art, science, technology, humanities, society and commerce. It is also the most innovative subject group. 

Innovative design mainly focuses on the following five disciplines: design theory and method, product and intelligent design, visual and information design, spatial design and management, and sustainable environmental design. It can be seen that "innovative design" has been endowed with new meanings and research contents, and we must establish a corresponding system of design education and personnel training. With "design thinking" as the core, the platform of "big design" is constructed, and the training of creative design talents, technological integration innovation talents, business model innovation and management talents are carried out with the goal of training compound design talents. In order to achieve this goal, it is imperative to set up a "special force" of innovative design talents with design as the center and interdisciplinary. Innovation Design Center is a national, open and international academic platform. In addition to the existing basic academic strength of Jiaotong University's design, we sincerely invite relevant design forces at home and abroad to join in the innovative design discipline group of Jiaotong University in different ways, accelerate the integration and innovation of "design science" and "industrial design + built environment", and make "innovative design" rapidly step into the forefront of the world's first-class disciplines for social development and human beings.
