Creative Design Center of Shanghai Jiaotong University was unveiled

On April 8, as one of the key construction projects of the National Double Creation Demonstration Base, the Innovation and Design Center of Shanghai Jiaotong University was unveiled in Minhang Campus. Academician Lin Zhongqin, the president and Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee, attended and addressed the founding meeting of the Center. Xu Shilong, Vice-Chairman of China Inventors Association, Chairman of Shanghai Harbour Group, Gu Feng, Standing Committee of the Party Committee and Minister of Organizational Department of the University, Li Benqian, President of the School of Media and Design, Shan Shilian, Secretary of the Party Committee, Yang Jianmin, President of the School of Marine and Architectural Engineering, Qihong, Secretary of the Party Committee of the College of Agriculture and Biology, and experts in the design field Scholars, representatives of teachers and students of relevant colleges attended the founding meeting. The meeting was chaired by Li Benqian.

Zhou Wuzhong, director of the Department of Design, School of Media and Design, introduced the basic situation of the Innovative Design Center (ICID-SJTU). The center relies on the design discipline of Jiaotong University, especially the interdisciplinary doctoral program of "Design Science and Engineering", and is constructed in accordance with the National Key Laboratory standards. More than 60 full-time teachers from relevant disciplines of Jiaotong University form a working team, which will focus on six functions: scientific research, training, talent service, design service, product service, Design Award evaluation, and strive to make due contributions to the National Double Creation Plan and the construction of Shanghai Science Creation Center.  Gu Feng read out the notice of the establishment of the Innovation Design Center of Shanghai Jiaotong University and the list of members of the Academic Committee and Center. The Center employs 17 experts who have made important achievements in the field of art and innovative design as academic members. Xu Zhilei, academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, Xu Ping, professor of the Central Academy of Fine Arts, is the director of the Academic Committee and Zhou Wuzhong is the director of the Innovative Design Center.  Lin Zhongqin, Gu Feng, Xu Shilong, Yang Jianmin, Qihong, Li Benqian and the Single World Federation jointly unveiled the brand. Lin Zhongqin awarded letters of appointment to members of the Academic Committee and to the head of the Center.Cao Yongkang, Associate Professor of Architecture Department of Shipbuilding College, Zhang Shujia, 2003 alumnus of Media Institute and founder of Shujia Handicraft Center, delivered speeches at the meeting respectively, expressing their understanding of the subject field of innovative design and their expectations for the future development of the center.

In his final speech, Lin Zhongqin congratulated the establishment of the Center. "Design is everywhere," he said. Innovative design plays a very important role in daily social life and industrial economic development. Over the years, the school has been trying to integrate design-related disciplines and give full play to the advantages of interdisciplinary collaboration. With the great opportunity of being selected as the first batch of national double-creation demonstration bases, Jiaotong University has finally realized the dream of building a "big design" platform, which is very gratifying and exciting. He hoped that the center could live up to the expectations of the school, make the design discipline of Jiaotong University bigger and stronger, and make due contributions to talent training and industrial innovation.

 The Innovative Design Center of Shanghai Jiaotong University consists of six major laboratories: Design Thinking Laboratory, Brand Design Laboratory, VR+X Virtual Reality Laboratory, Design Management Laboratory, Environmental Innovative Design Laboratory and Architectural Heritage Protection Laboratory. The director of each laboratory is a specialist in the relevant disciplines of Jiaotong University. The entity building of the center is located in the international innovation and entrepreneurship agglomeration area of No. 0 Bay, covering an area of 2000 square meters. It is expected to be completed and put into use in October 2017.
